Labor threatens state not to pay minimum wage

The labor movement has voiced its expectations, warning that states’ refusal to implement the new minimum wage would lead to serious unrest.

“Today we had a discussion with Labor about implementing the new minimum wage as promised by the governor.

“We want to assure you that the state government is still ready to implement and start paying the new minimum wage. We are now waiting for the state council of the Nigerian Labor Congress to submit its proposal for the new wage minimum.

“The state government will study the proposal and make necessary adjustments for speedy implementation of the new salary. We believe that the new salary structure will soon be ready for further action regarding its implementation.”

States where teachers receive a minimum salary of 18,000 naira

Legitime.ng reported earlier that the NUT expressed pessimism that local governments Nigeria may not be able to pay primary school teachers once implementation of the new minimum wage begins.

The report indicated that some States, including NasarawaEnugu, Zamfara, Borno, Yobe and Kogi did not implement the new minimum wage when the amount of N18,000 was approved.

Mike Ene, National President of the NUT, has maintained that some states are not implementing the minimum salary of N30,000 for LG teachers, saying it is not the responsibility of state governments.
