The Chiefs and Bills deserve a rematch against each other in the AFC playoffs

Just restart it. Again.

On Sunday, another thrilling confrontation between the Kansas City Chiefs against the Buffalo Bills it was probably just an appetizer.

Josh Allen beat Patrick Mahomes And the Chiefs’ perfect record was ruined. Yet despite all this, it seems there are still tasks to be accomplished. It was over but it wasn’t.

OK, rhetorical question: What are the chances these teams end up in the playoffs?

“One hundred percent,” said Bills rusher Von Miller the day after the 30-21 victory. “One way or another, whether it’s at home, at their place, we’re going to see the Chiefs again. Whether it’s the divisional round, the AFC Championship or whatever, we’ll see the Chiefs again, that’s for sure.

Imagine the buzz. When they met in the AFC Divisional Playoffs in Buffalo in January, CBS averaged more than 50 million viewers — more than for any NFL broadcast outside of a Super Bowl or ‘a conference championship game. The numbers from Sunday’s game will no doubt be impressive in their own right.

So it would be normal, even if these teams met on a gravel parking lot. The intensity, drama and competition was so good. Very often, highly anticipated sporting events don’t live up to the hype. Not with the Chiefs-Bills.

It’s always something. Last January, a field goal attempt by the Bills that would have equalized in the final minutes sailed wide right. In another divisional playoff series a few years prior, Mahomes drove a game-tying field goal in the final 13 seconds of the fourth quarter that paved the way for Kansas City to earn the overtime victory.

On Sunday, Allen left the score with a 26-yard touchdown run that essentially closed the door on the possibility of another Chiefs comeback.

Of course, Allen knows it too: They’ll see the Chiefs again. The Bills are 0 of 3 in playoff games against Mahomes and the Chiefs. So, to achieve their mission of Super Bowl glory, it seems likely that they will have to beat the Chiefs again. Or else.

“Given our history, we tend to meet in the playoffs,” Allen said.

Then again, Allen isn’t quite ready to jump into that anticipation.

“We’re not there yet,” he said. “We will focus on that once we get there.”

And the world of football will wait. Looking forward.
