How to prevent music from playing automatically on Android Auto and Apple CarPlay

Android Auto and Apple CarPlay make driving much easier. You can seamlessly switch between music tracks, block unwanted notificationsanswer calls, etc. However, there is one annoying aspect with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay: every time your phone connects to the car, it automatically starts playing music. This can be frustrating, especially if your speakers are set to a high volume level. If you, like me, want a little silence as soon as you get into your car, here’s how to prevent music from playing automatically on Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Disable automatic music playback on Android Auto

Like most things on Android, turning off the option to autoplay music as soon as you get into your car is much simpler. Here’s how to do it.

Note: This procedure is applicable to wired systems and Wireless Android Auto.

Open it Settings app on your phone and head to the app Connected devices section. Then tap Connection preferences.

Connected device settings

Access the Android Auto section. Under the Startup heading, turn off the Start music automatically to fall over. For good measure, restart your smartphone and your car’s infotainment system or head unit.

Disable Music Autostart Aa Settings

That’s about it. You will no longer have to deal with the music that fills your ears as soon as you get into your vehicle early in the morning!

Disable automatic music playback on Apple CarPlay

Unfortunately, things aren’t as simple as turning off a toggle on iOS. The procedure to turn off autoplay on an iPhone involves using the Shortcuts app. We will create a custom shortcut to automatically pause music playback as soon as iPhone connects to CarPlay. Here’s how to do it.

Open it Shortcuts app on your iPhone. Find the Automation at the bottom and press it. Then choose New automation.

Create a new automation shortcuts app

Select the CarPlay option. Then tap Log in and change the preference to Run immediately. You can choose to be notified every time the automation is run by enabling the toggle. Press Following once done.

Enable Carplay automation

Advice: If your car does not have Apple CarPlay and you only connect to the audio system via Bluetooth, select the Bluetooth option from the list and choose your car stereo system from the Devices section. Then follow the rest of the steps.

Choose it New Blank Automation list tile. Scroll down the horizontal list below the search bar and select Media.

Create automation for media

Find the play header below which you need to press the Play/Pause button. Next, select the Play/Pause banner and change it to Break. Choose Do in the upper right corner to save your automation.

Pause music automation

Now music playback will be automatically paused every time your iPhone connects to CarPlay.

If you want to find the music playing automatically when you get in your car, go back to Automation menu in the Shortcuts app. Swipe left about the automation we just created and hit DELETE.

Remove Carplay automation

Play music to your heart’s content

You no longer need to rely on the whims of Android Auto or Apple CarPlay to play music as soon as you get into your car. Using these methods, you can choose when you want to listen to music and when you just want to relax a little. Alternatively, you can also try using a Alternative to Android Auto for your navigation needs.
