Instant Reaction: Oilers Completely Shut Down in 3-0 Loss to Canadiens

Well, it was horrible.

On Monday night, the Edmonton Oilers lost 3-0 to the Montreal Canadiens, bringing their season record to 9-8-2.

The Canadians opened the scoring with the winning goal in the final minute of the second period, as Brendan Gallagher tipped the puck inside the marks to make it 1-0.

Even if Gallagher’s goal was all the Canadiens needed, it never hurts to get an insurance goal. Defenseman Kaiden Guhle beat Calvin Pickard from the right faceoff spot to double the lead, a goal the Oilers goaltender wishes he could get back. The Canadians also scored an empty-net goal.

To remember…

This was probably the worst game of the season for the Oilers. For a team blessed with firepower like Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Zach Hyman and many others, their scoring has been dismal this season. They only had four high-risk scoring chances throughout the game, according to Natural Stat Trick.

Three key Oilers players had tough games on Monday, as Mattias Ekholm, Leon Draisaitl and Evan Bouchard all finished -3, while Zach Hyman and Connor McDavid had a -2. Jeff Skinner hasn’t been a factor since the start of the season, as he was -1 with three shots on goal in 12 minutes and 19 seconds of ice time.

Calvin Pickard had a solid game in front of the post, saving 22 of 24 shots. However, deflections continued to be a problem for him and Stuart Skinner, as the first goal of the match was once again scored off a deflection. Opposition teams see this clearly and use it to gain access to the board.

There is some positive news in this game, however. The Oilers have gone four straight games without allowing a shorthanded goal since their game against the New York Islanders last Tuesday. They are 10/10 over this period.

Hopefully, the Oilers can prepare for their next game, which is Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. MT against the Ottawa Senators. Before Monday’s game, the Oilers were 2-1 in the first game of a back-to-back and 0-3 in the second game. They really need a win here.
