Federico Chiesa could leave Liverpool in January with Inter Milan keen to sign him

Federico Chiesa was linked to a surprise release of Liverpool ahead of the January transfer window, having moved to Anfield in a cut-price deal with Juventus last summer.

After the Reds’ failure for the Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi, Chiesa became Arne Slot’s first signing at the club since replacing Jurgen Klopp at the end of last season, signing a four-year contract.

However, the Italy international struggled to make an impact at the club after being replaced by Slot. He has accumulated just one Premier League appearance and has also missed Liverpool’s last five games as he attempts to return to fitness.

The 27-year-old has been offered the chance to return to his best form in familiar surroundings with Inter Milan keen to sign the striker on a six-month loan deal, according to Any sport.

Inter Milan will, however, face stiff competition from fellow Serie A side AC Milan and AS Roma, who are also keen to strengthen their squad for the second half of the season.

As things stand, it is unclear whether Federico Chiesa would prefer a transfer back to his homeland in January, with the Reds fighting for four titles after an impressive start to the season.

Arne Slot’s side have reached the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup and are top of the Premier League and Champions League tables.

Slot recently revealed he isn’t worried about Chiesa’s ongoing fitness struggles. The Dutchman said: “With Federico, it’s a little simpler; even if it’s more difficult, but it’s a little simpler to explain”, Slot explained last month.

“He missed a full pre-season, I’ve said it many times, and going to a league where the intensity could even be higher than the Italian league. We just played the two Italian teams so I can say that now.

“So that makes it difficult for him to make the step up to the intensity levels that the rest of the team is at now.

“It doesn’t have so much to do with the Italian championship or the Premier League, it has more to do with missing a full pre-season and it’s so difficult for every player – when games are constantly there – to build them towards the levels where we find ourselves.

“So, hard to say, but it’s a big disappointment for him that he’s in and out of training sessions all the time. I feel sorry for him.
