If you used a AI chatbotyou have seen how convenient it is to have an assistant who can instantly answer all your questions. Now imagine if this assistant could understand and act according to your needs without you telling it what to do: meet autonomous agents or Agentic AI.

While this vision may sound like a science fiction movie, many companies are working to make agentic AI a reality, and enterprise solutions are already available. Deloitte’s 2025 TMT Predictions report predicts that 25% of companies using Generative AI will launch agentic AI pilots by 2025 and 50% by 2027.

Additionally, the report suggests that investors have contributed more than $2 billion to agentic AI startups over the past two years, with efforts focused on the enterprise market. So, with such rapid growth and such robust investment, what impact will agents have on workers?

Agentic AI refers to assistants that make decisions independent of human intervention, choosing which actions to take to achieve a particular goal established by a human. They differ from co-pilotsthat respond to human demands to act.

Since agentic AI operates independently, the technology must be able to perform tasks reliably at all times – and the technology is not quite at the required level yet.

The report states that a fully agentic coding engineer, which would still require some human supervision, will be achievable by 2025. As the table below shows, a fully agentic coding engineer is so far away that it does not there is no planned date:

The report also describes how “enormous” the impacts of agentic AI could be given that there are a billion knowledge workers worldwide and productivity growth is stagnating in the United States. Productivity had only increased by 0.5% from 2019 to 2023 compared to growth of 0.8% from 1987 to 2023.

Generic AI must be fully capable of helping to increase productivity, which the report suggests may not be that far away.

“Most importantly, generational AI agents of all types must be reliable for businesses to use them: doing the right job most of the time is not enough. Some use cases and applications in late 2024 are showing encouraging signs of reliability. sufficient for adoption in early 2025,” the report said.

Agentic AI represents a new frontier for AI. However, the technology builds on pre-existing foundations, including large language models, enterprise applications, the Internet, and multimodal capabilities.

Ultimately, the report suggests that agentic AI will be useful even though it is at an early stage of development and adoption. Analysis says business leaders should prepare for the rise of AI agents by rethinking workflows and focusing on data governance and cybersecurity while remaining skeptical.

The report states that areas of work that will benefit from agentic AI include customer support, cybersecurity, where there is a significant shortage of skilled workers, regulatory compliance, and agent creators and orchestrators.
