Medical assistance in dying is a process that allows a person deemed eligible to receive help from a doctor to end their life.

The federal Criminal Code establishes the eligibility criteria for medical assistance in dying. Medical assistance in dying can only take place in specific circumstances and according to specific rules. To be eligible, the person must suffer from a serious and permanent health problem.

The Government of Canada has temporarily suspended the expansion of eligibility for medical assistance in dying to include eligible people with depression or mental illness until March 2027, to ensure provincial health systems have processes and supports.
