Chelsea ‘not working’ on deal to sign Caoimhin Kelleher from Liverpool

Chelsea are reportedly considering signing the Liverpool goalkeeper. Caoimhin KelleherHowever, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has shut down those reports.

The Republic of Ireland international is highly regarded at Anfield and has shown his worth by replacing Alisson Becker on several occasions. The Reds had to turn down a cash-plus player offer from Nottingham Forest for Kelleher last summer in order to keep him.

He has kept four clean sheets in eight games for Arne Slot’s Reds, who are five points clear at the top of the Premier League table after 11 matches played so far. They also top the Champions League table with 12 points and have also qualified for the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

Despite his impressive performances once again this season, it seems unlikely that Kelleher will permanently replace Alisson who is expected to return to full training this week ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash against Southampton.

Kelleher will struggle to play after the Brazilian returns, but many clubs are said to offer him regular playing time.

He said last summer that he was ready to leave Anfield permanently after Liverpool agreed a deal with Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili for next summer.

Several clubs are already monitoring his situation at Anfield, but Chelsea are not one of those clubs, with Fabrizio Romano confirming that the Blues are not in discussions with any other goalkeepers.

He posted on X: “Chelsea are currently not working on a deal to sign Caoimhin Kelleher from Liverpool, despite recent links. No discussions with another GK at this stage.”

Kelleher’s ambition to become number one could see him forced out of Liverpool next summer. He told reporters earlier this season: “I’ve made it clear over the last few years that I want to be number one and play week in, week out.

“The club has made the decision to recruit another goalkeeper. From the outside it looks like they made the decision to go in a different direction.

“My ambition has always been clear in recent seasons: I want to be number one.

“Sometimes, from the outside, it looks like it’s 100 percent my decision, but sometimes it’s not always in my hands.”
