Operations Manager Kevin Christian hopes the commitment to saving lives in the city continues.

A scroll bearing the signatures of more than 900 RNLI representatives as well as the Duke of Kent was put on display this weekend.

He traveled throughout Britain before returning where the organization launched and features the charity’s commitment printed in seven languages, including Manx.

Peel and Ramsey Operations Directors Allen Corlett And Kevin Christian says events held throughout the year have helped raise the charity’s profile on the island.

Emma Draper, our local democracy reporter, spoke to them during the signing of the scroll:

The ends of the roller were created from a 19th century flagpole from the Ramsey Lifeboat Station.

Douglas Mayor Natalie Byron-Teare said: “There is no better way to sum up the rich nautical heritage of the Isle of Man than through the rescue and fundraising work the RNLI carries out in the Manx Seas and the countless hours put in by the faithful volunteer lifeboat crews from our community.

As a tangible representation of the connection between all RNLI stations, lifeguard units and fundraising branches, it is only fitting that this scroll ends its journey in Douglas, the birthplace of the RNLI.

Douglas City Council is delighted to welcome the 200th anniversary ‘Connecting Our Communities’ scroll which will be recorded as a permanent and lasting part of the charity’s history.

RNLI chief executive Peter Sparkes said: “I feel very honored and privileged to be the penultimate signatory of the scroll and it is particularly poignant that I add my signature here in Douglas, the birthplace of the RNLI.

This is a special year for both the RNLI and Douglas – my congratulations to the town on its recently granted city status. The RNLI is proud to serve the island and we look forward to continuing our vital legacy here for generations to come.
