Trump Treasury search gains momentum with new round of meetings – BNN Bloomberg

(Bloomberg) — President-elect Donald Trump’s dramatic search for a Treasury secretary continues as he is scheduled to speak Wednesday with former Federal Reserve Governor Kevin Warsh and Marc Rowan of Apollo Global Management Inc., according to people familiar with the matter.

U.S. Sen. Bill Hagerty, Republican of Tennessee and also a potential candidate for a cabinet post, spent much of Tuesday with Trump, flying aboard the president-elect’s plane for the launch of a SpaceX rocket in Texas.

A representative for Rowan declined to comment. Warsh did not respond to a request for comment sent to him through a representative. A request for comment to Hagerty’s office was not immediately returned.

The conversations with the candidates, which come after days of deliberations and public positions for the Treasury position, have the potential to break the impasse over the nomination for the nation’s most powerful economic policy post, essentially the CFO of the United States.

Key Square Group LP founder Scott Bessent is also running for the position. The Trump transition team did not respond to a request for comment on the status of the research.

During an otherwise lightning-fast Cabinet build, the final week of the Trump administration’s evolution was marked by some surprising — and sometimes controversial — choices including Matt Gaetz for attorney general and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to lead Health and Human Services.

But much of the public wrangling to try to curry favor with Trump has taken place between allies of Howard Lutnick, who co-led his transition team, and Bessent.

On Tuesday, Trump put an end to the prevarication, announcing Lutnick as his choice for Commerce secretary and adding that the Cantor Fitzgerald LP CEO would have expanded authority over trade and tariff policies. The move — which gives Lutnick a larger policy portfolio than is typical for a Commerce chief — could also be the strongest sign yet that the president-elect is about to land a Treasury secretary .

Both Rowan and Warsh were added to the list of contenders in recent days as Trump grew frustrated with infighting for the position.

The Treasury pick is expected to be the first in a series of announced economic posts, including key White House posts: chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers and directors of the National Economic Council and the Domestic Policy Council.
