Search for suspected killer Matthew Zoll continues in woods near Rocky Point

Police are still searching for Matthew Zoll, 23, who is accused of killing his father, Joseph Zoll, at their Rocky Point home earlier this month.

Authorities focused their search on a large wooded area spanning more than 1,600 acres near key roads, such as William Floyd Parkway, Route 25A and Middle Country Road. The search, which began on November 9, put neighboring communities on alert.

Suffolk County police provided few details about the investigation, but it was revealed that Zoll allegedly crashed an SUV at the intersection of 25A and William Floyd Parkway, injuring himself.

Since then, the ministry has offered very little information to the public.

David Sarni, a professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, explained the methodical nature of the research.

“You start from the point where the vehicle was and then you expand. It’s a detailed grid search where you go through the area step by step,” he explains.

However, the lack of communication from authorities has caused concern among some residents.

“No one said a word. Not a word. And it’s a little disconcerting,” said Debra Lang, of Wading River. “Let the public know what’s happening,” she insisted.

Police declined a request for questioning, but confirmed they were actively searching the area again on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the community mourns the loss of Joseph Zoll.

A wake for the victim was held Tuesday evening and his funeral is planned for Wednesday morning.
