The City boss underwent surgery on the problem last season and it is believed Guardiola had to convince himself an extension was good for him and his family in the long term. Guardiola is still determined to lead an international team before retiring and that appears to be weighing heavily on his mind.

It now appears Guardiola is convinced continuing is the right decision with the official announcement of his one-year extension, including the option of a further 12 months, expected before the weekend’s clash against Tottenham Hotspur. Liverpool hope Guardiola’s decision to stay will give City a boost.
