Ten fun post-apocalyptic games where staying alive feels like an adventure

Let’s be honest: Post-apocalyptic worlds don’t exactly scream vacation hot spots. Cities are rubble, humanity is barely hanging on, and a mutated monstrosity hides behind a suspiciously placed pile of debris.

But somehow, video games have transformed this grim genre into a twisted survival playground that’s surprisingly fun to thrive in. Who knew collecting duct tape and making crossbows out of bed frames could be so satisfying?

It could be the freedom to let out your inner Mad Max or the way these games allow us to skip the depressing things and get straight to action. Whatever the reason, these titles prove that surviving the apocalypse doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom and NPCs crying over their dead plants.

So grab your Pip-Boy, check your inventory for medkits and Molotovs, and let’s dive into post-apocalyptic games where the end of civilization is just the beginning of the fun.

Okay, this one is a little off the beaten path. Caravan Sandwich is a cozy sci-fi-themed apocalyptic adventure where players get behind the wheel of a creaky off-road camper and go where the dusty wind blows.

Set in the radiation-saturated post-apocalyptic Chernobyl zone, STALKER 2 lets you survive while dodging mutants, uncovering mysteries, and looting like your life depended on it (spoiler: it does).

Why is it here? The atmosphere is so thick you could cut it with a shovel – perfect for fans of tense survival with a side of horrifying mutations.

The flame in the flood
Platforms: computer ; macOS; Xbox One; PlayStation 4; Nintendo Switch
Get it here

Survive a flooded world by traveling down dangerous rivers, collecting supplies and avoiding wild animals. It’s like surviving the apocalypse on a float, but with a lot more wild animals trying to eat you.

Why is it here? This is a beautifully crafted indie survival adventure in which every stroke of the paddle feels like a triumph over nature (and the occasional bear).

Special thanks to my favorite apocalyptic hobby, Fallout Shelter, because who doesn’t want to run a bunker and repopulate the earth single-handedly?

There you have it, proof that not all post-apocalyptic worlds have to be bleak wastelands of despair and overly aggressive NPCs demanding you fetch their grandmother’s old potato peeler.

Whether it’s building the colony of your dreams in the shadow of a nuclear crater or thwarting hordes of mutants with nothing but a crowbar and a bad attitude, these games show that surviving at the end of the world can be a real explosion.

Sure, the world has gone to hell, but at least you have killer vision.
