First days of weather alert: colder air and gusty winds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – A little taste of winter like weekend wind chill

**UPDATE** (8:00 a.m.) – The first day of weather alert **expired** for today. Thick fog has cleared across the Midstate

DENSE FOG THIS MORNING

An Early Day Weather Warning has been issued for our morning commute as areas of dense fog cover parts of the Midstate.

A dense fog advisory is in effect until 6 a.m. for parts of Middle Tennessee and southern Kentucky, so be on the lookout for rapidly changing road conditions during the early stages of the morning commute.

We will focus on the return of cooler air for the afternoon. High temperatures today will end in the 50s and the wind will be strong with gusts up to 30 mph in some areas. We will work to find some sunshine this afternoon.

Tonight it will be even colder, with temperatures reaching the 30s tomorrow morning. Wind chills tomorrow morning will be near freezing.

FIRST DAY WEATHER ALERT – THURSDAY

Thursday is the first weather alert day, as that’s when the biggest push of cold air in weeks will move into the Midstate. Highs will struggle to return to 50 in the afternoon and the wind will remain gusty with gusts near and above 30 mph. This gusty wind will make it feel like we are in the 40s and even 30s in some of the higher elevations.

Thursday night’s lows will fall into the mid 30s with wind chill values below zero by Friday morning. Since the wind will remain gusty Thursday evening, I think the frost will be tough for most of us to endure Friday morning, but there is a higher chance of frost this weekend.

In addition to this colder air, a storm system that drifts just to our north Thursday night and early Friday morning could bring a few snow showers to the Plateau, but I wouldn’t expect any accumulation.

WEEKEND AND WEEKEND

Friday will be partly sunny and again very cool with temperatures struggling to exceed 40°C in the afternoon. It will remain windy, but not as windy as midweek with winds near and sometimes above 20 mph.

Lows Friday night are in the mid 30s again with a few frosts expected Saturday morning.

Saturday will be slightly warmer with highs in the 50s with a mix of clouds and sunshine in the afternoon. It will be cold Saturday night with lows in the 30s and a few more frosts on Sunday. Sunday afternoon will be warmer again with highs in the 60s.

NEXT WEEK

Rain showers will return Monday and Tuesday of next week with temperatures returning to the 60s.
