second year forward Royal Soothsayer posted his first career double-double and Ohio State took charge of traveling to Evansville with an 80-30 victory Tuesday night at Value City Arena.

Ohio State (3-1) closed the first half on a 19-5 run and steadily pulled away against the visiting Purple Aces (1-4). Royal led the way with a career-high 20 points and 12 rebounds. Meechie Johnson Jr. had 13 points and John Mobley Jr. added 11.

The 50-point win is Ohio State’s first since a 97-43 win over High Point on Dec. 10, 2014. The 30 points are the fewest allowed by the Buckeyes since a 59-22 win over Samford on Nov. 29 2008.

Two Buckeyes scored their first career points. Freshman Colin White hit two 3-pointers and a freshman center Ivan Njegovan scored 7 points, including a 3-pointer in the last minute.

The Buckeyes lost sophomore forward Sean Stewart early in the second half when he dove for a rebound, hit his head on the ground and was slow to get up. Stewart was eventually helped to the locker room and did not return. He grabbed nine rebounds in 12 minutes.

These were the first three games against mid-tier opponents ranked No. 260 or lower nationally on KenPom.com, a streak that is ending. with a Black Friday game against ACC foe Pittsburgh.

Ohio State will host Campbell on Friday night.

“Definitely don’t take this as a tune-up,” Ohio State coach Jake Diebler said when asked that question. “There are some things we did well, maybe even earlier than expected, and others we need to improve. For us, it’s about growing as a team, building that chemistry on the pitch. “

Ohio State’s Sean Stewart leaves the game

Sophomore forward Sean Stewart hit his head on the ground while diving for a loose ball with about 18 minutes remaining. Stewart lay flat on his back for a while before sitting up and being helped up.

As he stood up, Stewart wobbled and was helped to the team bench, where he remained until the next media timeout.

With Ohio State leading 39-22 and 15:25 to play, Stewart was helped to the locker room along with two members of the training staff.

Ohio State leads Evansville at halftime

The Buckeyes had just nine points midway through the first half, but Ohio State took a 28-14 lead in what was not an engaging half of the basketball.

Ohio State closed the half on a 16-2 run as the Purple Aces missed their final 11 shots of the half. Evansville is just 4 of 31 (12.9%) from the field, but Ohio State’s lead is only 14 points as the Buckeyes are 7 of 24 (29.2%) and 2 of 11 (18.2%) from 3 with six turnovers.

Devin Royal leads Ohio State with 10 points and eight rebounds while drawing numerous fouls. Starters Micah Parrish and Sean Stewart are both scoreless with two fouls in eight and nine minutes played, respectively.

Ohio State’s offense gets going

Tied 9-9 midway through the first half, Ohio State began to get things going offensively thanks to freshman guard John Mobley Jr. As Aaron Bradshaw sealed his man in the paint, Mobley attacked, passed his guy and scored to reclaim the lead.

It was the start of a 12-5 run in which the Buckeyes had some success attacking the paint. Evan Mahaffey was fouled during a drive and made one of two free throws. Mobley scored on another drive. Devin Royal scored in the paint. Bruce Thornton drove, collapsed the defense and hit Mobley for a wide-open corner 3 that he buried.

Thornton drove, lobbed to Bradshaw and saw him slam the alley-oop to take a 21-14 lead with 3:56 left in the half.

Ohio State takes small lead over Evansville

With 7:22 left in the first half, Ohio State leads Evansville 11-9. The Buckeyes are 3 for 15 (20.0%) from the field and the Purple Aces are 2 for 17 (11.8%). It hasn’t been pretty on both ends of the floor.

Devin Royal and Sean Stewart each have five rebounds for Ohio State, which has 13 as a team.

Cold shooting and turnovers begin to plague Ohio State-Evansville

Diebler spoke earlier in the week and on the official pregame radio show about trying to get 3-point shots with touches of the paint. At the first media timeout, the Buckeyes were 1 of 4 from 3-point range and none of them followed a touch of the paint.

Meechie Johnson Jr., who was just recognized for reaching 1,000 career points in last Friday’s game against Texas A&M, was the only one to tie the game at 5 with 14:33 left in the half .

Ques Glover and Austin park for Ohio State

The Buckeyes will be shorthanded against Evansville. Guard Ques Glover and center Austin Parks are both listed as out on the official availability report released by the Big Ten.

Parks missed Friday’s loss to Texas A&M due to an undisclosed injury and was not seen on the bench on television. Glover played eight minutes in the first half and scored 6 points on 2-of-2 shooting from 3, but he limped out of the game and went to the locker room with members of the team’s training staff .

Glover returned to action during the first half, but Diebler said he was advised not to play the sixth-year guard after halftime. He suffers from an ankle injury.

Fourth-year forward Kalen Etzler missed the first three games with an undisclosed injury, but is not listed on this injury report.
