China’s 35 million ‘remaining men’ urge proposal to foreign brides to narrow gender gap | Tendency

China is grappling with a significant demographic challenge, characterized by a surplus of nearly 35 million so-called “remaining” men. The issue gained attention following a controversial suggestion from an associate professor at Xiamen University, who proposed promoting international marriages as a potential solution. His comments sparked widespread debate and outrage online, as reported by the South China Morning Post (SCMP).

The root of the problem

The demographic imbalance can be attributed to the country’s decades-long one-child policy, which has skewed gender ratios and resulted in approximately 34.9 million more men than women, according to the seventh national population census conducted in 2020. A recent report from the Institute of Chinese Rural Studies at Central China Normal University highlighted the increasing difficulties faced by young rural men in finding a wife. High bride prices and less recognition of traditional marriage are identified as significant obstacles in this current crisis.

International marriages on the rise

The professor cited Ding Changfa’s suggestion to facilitate international marriages, including encouraging men to consider partners from countries including Russia, Cambodia, Vietnam and Pakistan. He explained: “In rural China, we have around 34.9 million ‘leftover men’ who face the pressures of providing housing, a car and a bride price including between 500,000 and 600,000 yuan (70,000 and 84,000 US dollars).

“Solving this problem could involve attracting a significant number of eligible young women from abroad,” Ding noted, highlighting the growing trend of international marriages among Chinese men.

The matchmaking trend

As the disparity persists, some professional Douyin matchmakers have begun offering matchmaking services specifically aimed at connecting Chinese men with Russian women. This emerging trend capitalizes on the demographic differences between the two nations, with Russia experiencing a surplus of women.

Financial influencer Jingongzi, who has over 1.8 million followers on Douyin, commented: “Southeast Asia has had close ties with China since ancient times, and culturally, we share many similarities . For example, Vietnam celebrates the Lunar New Year, so Southeast Asian women generally do not face significant culture shock when coming to China.
