In her sixth cookbook, Not too sweet, Jessica Seinfeld has collected over 100 dessert recipes that satisfy everyone gourmand without too much sugar, but her initial interest in desserts began with one dish in particular. “I always loved Duncan Hines’ Devil’s Food Cake when I was a kid,” says Seinfeld General conditions. “It was the first thing I learned to cook on my own. That feeling of independence in the kitchen from a young age set me on the path to relaxation and joy in the kitchen.”

In a world where health and well-being are constantly marketed, is there a way to enjoy a little something sweet without feeling guilty? The answer is easily yes for Seinfeld. “I work hard, I exercise, and I raise my family carefully, so I like to give myself something that feels like a reward for a job well done,” she says. “But as with everything I do, eating dessert should be done in moderation. The recipes from Not too sweet are just that: a dessert prepared in a more responsible way.

But desserts are more than just treats, they often signal a special occasion filled with sentiment. Think about your upcoming vacation route where pies, puddings or cakes will certainly be abundant. (If not, consider changing plans). “Birthdays, weddings, graduations, anniversaries and more are often topped off with cake or treats, in recognition of the special event taking place,” says Seinfeld. “These desserts remind us of wonderful times in our lives when we felt loved and celebrated.” An example of this in his personal life, you ask? “My husband, Jerry, likes me to make him the same cake every year for his birthday.”

Below, Seinfeld shares his essentials for dessert success this holiday season.

French nutmeg mill

Seinfeld says, “You eat with your eyes first,” which is why this nutmeg grinder comes in handy. “It looks like an elegant upgrade from using a grater.”
