Laredo police search puts three UISD schools in ‘safe mode’

LAREDO, Texas (KGNS) – Three elementary schools near Mines Road — Kazen, Finley and Fasken — are in “safe mode” as police search for a missing person, officials confirmed Wednesday, Nov. 20.

According to UISD spokesperson Brenda Medina, schools have been in safe mode since 8 a.m. at the request of Laredo police.

Police later clarified that the search stemmed from an incident reported on Tuesday evening, November 20. “Last night we received a call regarding a domestic problem. There was no assault or actual arrest,” said Joe Baeza of the Laredo Police Department. “The person of interest in this case has not been located. He was experiencing what we call an emotional crisis type event.

Although the person has not been located, police shared the information with UISD due to the proximity of the schools. UISD then decided to use “safe mode” as a security measure.

Secure mode means all exterior doors are locked, but classes continue indoors. Parents can still enter the school under certain rules.

“This is now a regular process where precautionary measures are sometimes taken to ensure the safety and security of faculty, staff and students,” Baeza said. “There has never been a direct or indirect threat against students or schools.”

The police stressed that this measure was only a precautionary measure. The investigation is ongoing.
