Is Trump ready to make Britain a state?

A message do the claims that President-elect Donald Trump is considering making Britain a state.

Verdict: false

There is no evidence that Trump plans to do so. Congress has the power to admit new states, not the president.

Fact check:

Social media users say Trump will work to make Britain a state. For example, an image on an job contains the following text: “Donald Trump is set to bring back an 1869 bill that allows him to make Britain a state of America. This will mean that the UK will live under US rules. »

The statement is false. There is no proof to show that Trump plans to make Britain a state. (RELATED: Has Britain’s energy price cap increased due to the closure of its last coal-fired power station?)

Congress has the power to admit new states, not the president. Article IV, section 3 of the U.S. Constitution provides that “new States may be admitted by the Congress into this Union” and that “the Congress shall have power to dispose of and adopt all necessary rules and regulations respecting the territory or other property belonging to the States -United. »

THE job claims that there is a bill from 1869 which, if brought back, would allow Britain to become a state. This bill don’t do exist.

This claim could come from Peter Preston’s 1999 satire titled “51st State.” Preston’s political satire tells history of Britain leaving the European Union and almost joining the United States.
