Transgender women banned from women's facilities at US Capitol, House speaker says

House Speaker Mike Johnson has spoken out on the Capitol’s bathroom policy, saying transgender women will not be allowed to use the Capitol’s women’s facilities.

WASHINGTON (WPVI) — House Speaker Mike Johnson has spoken out on the Capitol’s bathroom policy, saying transgender women will not be allowed to use the Capitol’s women’s facilities.

The controversy began earlier this week when South Carolina Republican Rep. Nancy Mace introduced a resolution banning transgender women from the women’s restrooms in the U.S. Capitol complex.

It was introduced in response to Delaware Democrat Sarah McBride becoming the first transgender member of Congress at the start of the new term.

McBride responded to Johnson’s statement Wednesday, saying, “I’m not here to fight about bathrooms. I’m here to fight for Delawareans and to reduce the costs families face.

Like all Members, I will follow the rules laid out by Speaker Johnson, even if I do not agree with them. »

Johnson did not say how he would enforce the Capitol bathroom policy.
