Transgender people banned from Capitol bathrooms that match their gender identity, says House Speaker Johnson

House Speaker Mike Johnson said Wednesday that women’s facilities at the Capitol complex are for biological women only, as Congress prepares to swear in its first openly transgender representative.

“All single-sex facilities in the Capitol and House office buildings — such as restrooms, locker rooms and locker rooms — are restricted to persons of that biological sex,” Johnson (R-La.) said in a press release.

“It is important to note that each member office has its own private restroom and unisex restrooms are available throughout the Capitol,” he added. “Women deserve women-only spaces. »

The speaker then told reporters that “like all House policy, it is enforceable” and asserted that “we are not anti-anyone, we are pro-women” with this policy.

The speaker’s announcement follows controversy among Republican lawmakers in the House of Representatives over transgender Rep. Sarah McBride (D-Del.), who represents the First State’s at-large district.

“I’m not here to fight about toilets. I’m here to fight for Delawareans and to reduce the costs families face. Like all members, I will follow the rules set forth by President Johnson, even if I do not agree with them,” McBride, who was born male and identifies as female, responded in a statement on X.

“This effort to distract from the real issues facing this country has not distracted me over the past few days as I have remained working hard to prepare to represent the greatest state in the Union in January “added the 34-year-old former president. former incoming legislator.

In 2016, McBride publicly bragged about flouting a policy restricting transgender access to women’s restrooms.

“Here I am in a women’s restroom in North Carolina that I’m not allowed to enter. Stop it. We are good people. #ThisIsTransgender, McBride wrote on X at the time with a bathroom selfie.

President-elect Donald Trump indicated that same year that Caitlyn Jenner would be allowed to use the women’s restroom at Trump Tower.

Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) has publicly and privately demanded that women’s facilities at the Capitol be restricted to biological women.

She was supported by several Republican lawmakers such as far-right Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.).

Greene even threatened to come to blows with McBride if they had an encounter at a women’s facility.

“He’s a man. He’s a biological male. So he’s not allowed to use our women’s restrooms, women’s gym, locker rooms and women’s spaces,” Greene said. told reporters this week. “He has a lot of places to go.”

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) blasted Republicans this week for pressing the issue of transgender bathrooms.

“That’s the lesson you learned from the November election…that you want to intimidate a member of Congress?” Jeffries groaned during a press conference Tuesday.

Mace authored two resolutions aimed at protecting women’s facilities — one that did so in the Capitol complex and a second that she announced Wednesday that applies to federal offices.

“Oh, you thought threatening me would shut me up?” No, I simply doubled down and introduced a new bill to protect women and girls across the country, on all federal properties, everywhere,” she proclaimed. on Wednesday.
