MOFA sues Peruvian contractor over APEC billboard incident

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) announced on Wednesday that it had filed a lawsuit against a Peruvian entrepreneur who allegedly failed to prevent members of the Chinese delegation to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit from cutting power. electricity to a Taiwanese government billboard in Lima.

Vice Foreign Minister Tien Chung-kwang (田中光) told a legislative hearing that the contractor failed to protect the billboard from being tampered with by individuals who cut the power supply for 40 minutes to prevent Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平) from seeing him during the November 15-16 summit.

“We are determined to fight this to the end,” Tien said, noting that Taiwan’s representative office in Peru has filed an official protest with the Peruvian government.

According to the ministry, during the summit, Taiwan placed an illuminated billboard and seven T-shaped advertisements on the streets of Lima, with China repeatedly attempting to disrupt their display, including by cutting power lines and blocking the panels.
