Probably no extension of the co-ownership deadline

HOBE SOUND, Fla. — Florida lawmakers said this week there is unlikely to be a special session to extend the deadline for condo associations facing rising fees under new regulations.

“I’ve heard people all over the state are confused and upset,” Darlene VanRiper of the Treasure Coast Condo Alliance told WPTV Wednesday.

Its organization was formed because of the frustration and pressure put on condo owners facing increasing HOA fees as condo associations attempt to complete planning budgets for future repair work by December 31.

The new regulations were put in place after the Tragedy at the edge of the surf in 2021.

“I know they’re trying to protect their constituents,” VanRiper said. “No one wants another collapse, but they could have stopped most of this collapse, maybe moved forward with the older buildings.”

“Look, it’s not nice,” said Jimmy Patronis, Florida’s chief financial officer. “We have an environment where these HOAs need to take their maintenance obligations seriously.”

Republican leaders at the Florida Capitol said they plan to consider condo regulations at their regular meeting in March.

“If we had to sum up my priorities under one word to give you everything, it would be affordability,” said new House Speaker Daniel Perez, R-Miami.
