Driver narrowly misses head-on collision in St. Landry Parish

OPELOUSAS — Tuesday afternoon, Sidney Carroll says he almost lost his life while on his way to St. Landry Parish for work.

“And before I knew it, this car drove past me and dove in the wrong direction,” Carroll said.

Imagine you are driving to work, doing your usual route, and this happens: a car is coming in the wrong direction at 200 km/h.

The driver, Sidney Carroll, claims the scary moment was captured on his dashboard camera. He then posted the video on his social media, which has been viewed more than 100,000 times.

According to the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office, the driver of the other car was in the middle of a fleeing police force heading east on U.S. 190 toward Port Barre.

Police said the driver, Kenan Diquan Charles, crossed the median westbound on U.S. 190 toward oncoming traffic.

Police were tracking down Charles for drug possession and trafficking.

“It happened so fast I didn’t know what to think, and then I realized I was almost in a near-death experience,” Carroll said.

Carroll says he’s lucky and grateful to be alive.

“I could have been at the funeral home right now,” Carroll said.

Due to the safety of other drivers, the sheriff’s office ended the pursuit.

Charles is still at large and wanted by the police; he faces two charges: aggravated flight from a police officer and aggravated assault with a motor vehicle against a police officer.

“Once you see the car, it’s too late; thank God I didn’t respond because that way he could respond because he had no room for error,” Carroll said.
