Citing five current and former Russian officials familiar with the Kremlin’s internal affairs, Reuters reported that Putin could largely agree to freeze the conflict along the front lines.

He added, however, that the precondition was that Ukraine renounces its membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and NATO and excludes the concession of a large number of occupied Ukrainian territories.

Sources indicated that it was possible to negotiate on the exact division of the four regions occupied by Russia: Donetsk and Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson.

He also predicted that Russia could withdraw from its relatively small occupied territories in Kharkiv, northern Ukraine, and Mykolaiv, southern Ukraine, and discuss security guarantees for Ukraine.

Along the same lines, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reiterated Putin’s current position that he was ready to negotiate, but said freezing the conflict was unacceptable and stressed the importance of achieve this goal.
