West Nile virus discovered in Cheboygan goose | News, Sports, Jobs

One of six geese found dead in Cheboygan County water last month was tested and found to be infected with West Nile virus.

The announcement was made Wednesday in a press release from the District Health Department No. 4.

The lone goose was the only one recovered from the water and checked for the virus.

People with West Nile virus are infected by mosquitoes and most do not show any signs or symptoms of the disease.

In rare cases, it can cause life-threatening illness, especially in very young children, the elderly, or people with weakened immune systems.

There has recently been an increase in the number of birds identified with similar illnesses in northern Michigan.

About one in 150 infected people can develop a very serious illness called encephalitis, or inflammation of the brain. The Department of Health reminds people to protect themselves from mosquito bites, even during the colder months, to prevent the spread of diseases such as West Nile virus.

“Mosquito season extends into November in Michigan, so even when it starts to get cooler outside, there will still be a risk of getting bitten,” says Denise Bryan, health manager at DHD4 . “West Nile virus is preventable. Our community has many beautiful places for recreational activities. Remember to protect yourself when you are outside.

Residents who encounter a sick bird or mammal are encouraged to report such animals to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources by visiting www2.dnr.state.mi.us/ors/Home or calling/texting (518 ) 336-5030.
