Man City news: Pep Guardiola to stay – what do rival fans think?

We asked our fans of Manchester City’s three biggest current rivals – Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool – for their thoughts on the news that Pep Guardiola has agreed a new deal to stay with the Premier League champions.

Jordan Chamberlain, Liverpool fan

It wasn’t the best news to wake up to from a Liverpool perspective. A few years ago, Pep extended during the international break in November and it revitalized Manchester City and propelled them to the Premier League title. This repetition is obviously the problem.

Guardiola is the best manager in the world. He has been for some time. It’s a lazy myth that he only won so much because he played for a club that spent a lot of money. If that were the case, why haven’t Manchester United done anything of note in the last decade? Why aren’t Chelsea automatic title contenders? He is a ruthlessly brilliant tactician and someone totally obsessed with winning.

Over the years, his teams have always been a little ahead of those of Jurgen Klopp. The German often beat City in one-off matches, but over the course of the season, Guardiola came into his own. Klopp lost the title with 97 and 94 points, remember.

Arne Slot, however, arrived at Liverpool and made almost no mistake. He maximizes the talent at his disposal and I would argue, perhaps controversially, that Liverpool currently have better players than City – from back to front.

Their first ever meeting is next weekend and it could be symbolic, given a Liverpool win could see Guardiola eight points behind Slot, provided both teams win when they return from the international break.

Alex Turk, Manchester United fan

Ruben Amorim has understandably made managerial headlines in Manchester this week. But an abnormal spike temporarily sidetracked the discussion Tuesday.

The all-conquering Manchester City boss is here to stay. At least for one more season after this one.

It’s a bit boring, isn’t it? But should Manchester United fans be bothered? I don’t think so.

Arne Slot’s near-perfect start at Liverpool has disappointed many Old Trafford regulars who were hoping for a post-Jurgen Klopp slump, mirroring an all-too-familiar decline after the Sir Alex Ferguson era.

It was also a reminder that Guardiola’s departure from City does not automatically mean the same thing, although there would be an air of vulnerability at the Etihad Stadium.

The painful truth is that City are an expertly managed club – 115 charges pending – and that is why, despite Txiki Begiristain’s imminent departure, the Catalan manager is staying put.

So with that in mind, United need to focus on themselves. Amorim’s arrival has sparked a wave of optimism, and rightly so.

It has been a painful decade. City and Liverpool fighting for the Premier League while United fighting for a European place is now the norm.

So the most important thing is to support the efforts of Amorim and Ineos to prepare to pounce when Guardiola eventually calls it quits.

Oli Price-Bates, Arsenal fan

Pep Guardiola extending his stay at Manchester City has provoked a shrug reaction from myself and many Arsenal fans.

There is still an underlying expectation (perhaps more hope) that City will be punished for their alleged wrongdoing and then heavily penalized.

I’m sure Guardiola has some sort of break clause if that were to happen, so for me the future of Guardiola and Manchester City depends more on the outcome of the charges against them, charges which they are fighting Effectively.

I wonder if this contract extension has been announced now to provide a deflated City team with an early season boost rather than for a real longer-term commitment.

As for how this affects Arsenal this season, I think we have our own issues to sort out rather than spending too much time thinking about other clubs’ affairs. And right now, it’s Liverpool that Mikel Arteta has to catch up with.

Arsenal need to make sure they are there to capitalize if Manchester City aren’t at their 90-point best for whatever reason, otherwise they will only have themselves to blame.
