‘I Could See the Handles Tearing’: John M. Chu on the Bad Moment That Made Everyone on Set Cry (And of Course, Cynthia Erivo Was Involved)

There are many reasons to see John M. Chu film adaptation of Wicked, the main one being the performances of this stellar cast of some emblematic pieces. Ever since the film started showing, people haven’t been able to stop gushing about Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo live vocal performances. This will ensure memorable and emotional moments, especially if you were on set at the time of filming and a chorus of birds decided to join you.

I recently spoke with John M. Chu himself, and described his biggest “goosebumps moment” during production on Wickedhe told a beautiful story of the moment Cynthis Erivo as Elphaba sang one of the musical’s most moving songs, “I’m Not That Girl,” with the help of some feathered friends :

One of the moments that gave me the most goosebumps was I’m Not That Girl. Of course, Cynthia sings. And at that point, if you watch it, it’s almost like the music is coming from nowhere. We couldn’t actually hear. It’s only in his ears, unless I put my headphones in. So I just hear this little echo in this giant forest set that we built in the soundstage, and there were birds nesting in things. And every time she sang, these birds sang because they had some kind of attachment to her voice.
