Wafcon 2024: Everything you need to know about the draws for the African Women’s Cup of Nations

The draw for the 2025 African Women’s Cup of Nations will take place on Friday, November 22.

Nigeria hosted the first edition in 1998 and won the title nine times, followed by Equatorial Guinea who failed to win it twice and South Africa who won the last edition.

The Super Falcons will find out their opponents for the group stage of next year’s tournament later this evening.

The draws will take place for the Technical Center of the Mohamed VI Football Complex in Salé, near Rabat, Morocco.

The four highest ranked teams from the last edition are among the teams qualified for this edition. Among them are South Africa, holders of the cup, Morocco, host country, Zambia and Nigeria.

How many teams are qualified?

Na 12 teams qualify. According to the rule, they are divided into 12 teams qualified in four levels according to the Fifa ranking.

The rankings will ensure an initial balanced distribution of teams for the tournament.

Level 1: Morocco (host), Nigeria, South Africa

Level 2: Zambia, Ghana, Tunisia

Level 3: Mali, Senegal, Algeria

Level 4: DR Congo, Tanzania, Botswana

Morocco, as the host country, will automatically occupy the A1 position, while South Africa, the defending champions, will occupy the C1 position. The third team for level 1 is Nigeria which will place them for position B1.

Salima Mukansanga, who makes history as the first woman to referee the CAF Africa Cup of Nations match for Cameroon, is among three pipo who have been confirmed as draw assistants.

Meet the Drawing Assistants

Andile Dlamini (South Africa): She will be a key member of South Africa’s victorious Wafcon 2022 team, Andile Dlamini, one of Africa’s most accomplished goalkeepers.

Many know her for her commanding presence and inspiring leadership. She played a key role in helping South Africa win their first Wafcon title.

Salima Mukansanga (Rwanda): Latest referee, Mukansanga makes history as the first female official to referee a men’s match at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. Her inclusion shows her influence on African and world football, as she referees many high-level matches.

Fatiha Laassiri (Morocco): Former Moroccan international and famous figure in women’s football, Laassiri bin represents Morocco in various international tournaments. Today a respected coach and mentor, she defends the development of women’s football in North Africa.

When Wafcon starts

The 13th edition of the Caf African Women’s Cup of Nations will take place from July 5 to 26, 2025 for Morocco.

South Africa became defending champions and won Morocco’s first continental title two years ago.
