Google will allow you to search for products on Maps

Google added some new trips and shopping features in Maps that aim to make it easier to find local products and stay on time during peak periods. Starting today, Maps now lets users search for items like home goods, clothing and electronics, and find nearby stores that sell them – a useful feature for all last minute purchase during the holidays.

Search results in Maps will display individual product listings as well as locations where generic examples of desired items can be found (showing nearby stores that sell “holiday sweaters,” for example). Product listings are presented the same as products in Google Shopping, only with useful information such as distance from the store and whether the item is currently in stock.

The update effectively adds Google Shopping listings directly into Maps, but with stock information, so you can purchase them in person.

The update also makes travel planning easier by allowing Maps users to check and report weather disruptions such as flooded roads or unplowed snow. Users and local transportation agencies can also report any delays on bus or train routes to keep riders informed and limit the impact on travel arrangements.

Electric vehicle drivers whose vehicles have Google built-in can plan trips on their phone and send them directly to their car. This includes charging stops, and Maps can inform users which charging stations are compatible with their vehicle’s plug type by referencing the car’s make and model. And for users who will be transporting larger items in trailers, Maps now allows users to add cargo dimensions in the in-car app to display trailer-friendly routes that avoid bridges and low tunnels.

Correction of November 14: Removed the “popular times” description from Google Maps as a new in-app feature. Google says it’s just a general online guide based on previous data.
