Three versions will be offered, each bringing different levels of standard kit. Base Camper models act more like big vans with five individual seats and a manually operated sunroof, while Coast and Ocean models pack in all the equipment, including a kitchen sink. All versions are now equipped with two sliding doors, one on each side.

The Volkswagen California Camper gets 16-inch alloy wheels, a side awning, all-round parking sensors and a mini kitchen that pulls out of a drawer in the tailgate. Inside, you’ll find VW’s 10-inch Discover infotainment system with wireless connectivity. Apple CarPlay And Android Autoplus six USB-C slots. This model also gets a full set of magnetic curtains and roller shutters for the interior windows, as well as a small touchscreen panel in the C-pillar controlling many of the vehicle’s functions.

Venturing to the California coast (from £70,576) brings 17-inch tri-zone wheels climate control and a rear view camera. Coast models only have four seats (again, individual), but have a proper galley with a pull-out fridge, as well as a shower connection fed from the fresh water tank. The roof is also electrically operated on these versions.

At the top of the range is the familiar California Ocean, with 18-inch wheels, a matrix-LED headlights and a full-width front light bar, as well as 30-color ambient lighting inside. Buyers also get heated front seats, keyless entry and the upgraded Discover Pro infotainment system with integrated satellite navigation. Prices for this version start from £77,476; Both the Coast and Ocean can be had with a 201hp petrol engine for around £3,000 more.

The California is again available with a choice of single or two-tone paint finishes, as well as three color options for the sunroof fabric. There are also seven alloy wheel designs, ranging from 16 to 19 inches.
