How the Latest Jobs Report Could Sway NC Voters

Latest jobs report revealed job growth has slowed — as many experts expected.

Only 12,000 jobs were created last month. This is the smallest increase since 2020. It is also significantly lower than the 223,000 jobs created in September.

Economist Mike Walden said the report was no surprise to experts. The report constitutes a special case due to particular circumstances, reporting the consequences of two major hurricanes, Helene And Miltonas well as strikes at Boeing.

This is the last jobs report before Election Day, where elections can be decided based on the health of the economy.

Some North Carolinians said the economy and inflation were the biggest players in this election.

Walden said ABC11 voters will likely hear ads highlighting the lack of job growth and “maybe try to point out the negative part of it.”

“But for an economist this number was expected and, furthermore, we still see the economy growing,” he said. “This is a unique situation due to unique factors that are truly beyond anyone’s control.”

Walden expects things to change quickly, pointing to a low unemployment rate of 4.1%.
