Holtec plans to involve Ukraine’s Energoatom in building a small reactor in the United States

MOSCOW. November 13 (Interfax) – The American company Holtec International invited experts from the Ukrainian company Energoatom to join the project team that will work on the deployment of a small modular reactor (SMR) SMR-300 at the site of the nuclear power plant (NPP) of Palisades. in the United States, Ukrainian media reported, citing Energoatom, which in turn referred to Holtec President and CEO Kris Singh.

“The involvement of Energoatom representatives in the construction, testing and commissioning of the SMR at the American site of the Palisades nuclear power plant will allow the company to gain experience for subsequent implementation of this technology in Ukraine,” Energoatom said.

The invitation of the company’s experts to the Holtec project team demonstrates the high confidence of the Ukrainian partners and Energoatom, said Energoatom CEO Piotr Kotin.

Holtec has already received a $1.52 billion loan from the U.S. Department of Energy to restart the Palisades nuclear power plant, where two SMR-300 reactors are expected to be deployed.

As reported, Energoatom and Holtec have implemented a project to construct and commission a centralized spent nuclear fuel storage facility in Ukraine.

The companies also reached an agreement on the implementation of two large-scale projects in Ukraine, namely the construction of a plant for the production of SMR components and a plant for the production of components for the centralized storage facility of spent nuclear fuel, which have been manufactured in the United States until now.
