King Diamond royally rocks Brooklyn’s Kings Theater

Heavy metal legend King Diamond is currently on its long awaited Headlining fall release in North Americanicknamed the “St. Lucifer Hospital Tour of 1920.” With support from New Jersey thrash veterans Exaggeration and the Californian trio Night Demon, the long journey began on October 15 in San Antonio and should end on December 6 in Dallas (buy tickets here). The tour made a stop in Brooklyn, New York on Wednesday evening, October 30, at the opulent Kings Theater, an ideal venue for hosting metal royalty.

King Diamond brought its horror-filled metallic extravaganza to Brooklyn’s Flatbush neighborhood, offering an elaborate stage setup complete with multi-level staircases, horror-themed props, dancers, costume changes and an abundance of flashing lights and effects that exceeded expectations.

The band’s set kicked off with the powerful one-two punch of “Arrival” and “A Mansion in Darkness,” with the King joined by founding guitarist Andy LaRocque, longtime guitarist Mike Wead, bassist Pontus Egberg, drummer Matt Thompson and a special tour. Myrkur, who provides backing vocals and keyboards throughout the tour.

Before the band launched into an obvious track for the show – the classic “Halloween” – the king briefly introduced Myrkur’s 5-year-old son Otto, who was adorably dressed in a skeleton outfit. “He’s ready for Halloween, you know!” exclaimed the king, while mother Myrkur looked at him proudly from the top of the stairs. Myrkur’s husband and Otto’s father, Keith Abrami (known for his drum work with Artificial Brain and Shredded), joined in on the heartfelt moment, which elicited massive cheers and devil horns from the room attic.

King and company created classics like “Sleepless Nights,” “The Invisible Guest,” “The Candle,” “Eye of the Witch” and “Welcome Home.” For the latter, King made a haunting entrance, appearing on stage with a creepy old man mask while of course helping the old grandmother on stage. The band also treated the crowd to two brand new songs, “Spider Lilly” and “Electro Therapy,” and even added the recent “Masquerade of Madness.” For their encore, they went all out with a rendition of the spooky gem “Abigail.”

Metal pros Overkill kept the room’s energy in high gear during their live support slot, hammering the audience with their thrilling classics like “Rotten to the Core,” “Hello from the Gutter” and “Elimination.” The group maintained their momentum by including a few tracks from their latest album, Scorchedperforming the album’s title track and the title track “The Surgeon”. Middle fingers were raised in the air as the band closed their set with their rendition of The Subhumans’ “Fuck You.”

Night Demon exploded onto the stage at 8 p.m., unleashing a torrent of darkness with a barrage of songs from their self-titled debut EP and albums. Curse of the Damned And Outsider.
