Dave McCormick invited to Senate orientation session

Pennsylvania Republican Dave McCormick was invited to the U.S. Senate freshman orientation session just in time, after Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego won his Senate race in Arizona.

This week, from Tuesday to Thursday, new senators will learn the ins and outs of their new position. But as of Monday, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) had not invited McCormick to the event. He also did not invite Gallego, a Democrat leading the Senate race in Arizona.

Schumer’s office said Tuesday morning that Gallego and McCormick had both been invited to attend an orientation session. The decision comes after The Associated Press determined Gallego won his race Monday night. The AP reported McCormick’s run last week.

Monday, a Schumer spokesperson said McCormick was not invited because there were more than 100,000 ballots left to count in Pennsylvania and the race was not yet decided.

“As is customary, we will invite the winner once the votes are counted,” the spokesperson said.

Ballots are still being counted Tuesday and incumbent Democratic Sen. Bob Casey has yet to concede the race.

The remaining ballots continue to be counted after the winners of each election, whether close or not, are announced. But the process has received particular attention in Pennsylvania this year because the race is close and Casey’s campaign has continued to argue that the remaining ballots could swing the race.

“Across our Commonwealth, nearly 7 million people voted in a free and fair election,” Casey said in a statement Tuesday. “Our county election officials will finish counting these votes, as they do in every election. The American democratic process was born in Pennsylvania and this process will continue.

McCormick had already job online Monday morning that he is eagerly awaiting direction from the Senate before being invited.
