Protection of CSOs, recognition sought | Manila weather

THE Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has said it is alarmed by “continuing incidents” of enforced disappearances, harassment and unwarranted surveillance against members of civil service organizations (CSOs) by security forces. State of the Philippines.

“Following the recent public inquiry into red-tagging by the CHR, we are deeply concerned by allegations that state agents have increased their attacks on civil society organizations, posing serious risks to democratic foundations and the rule of law in our country,” the agency said. said in a statement.

He adds that CSOs play a crucial role in a functioning democracy.

“They play an instrumental role in voicing the concerns of marginalized groups, defending human rights and supporting social and economic development in the Philippines. However, actions that undermine these organizations, such as enforced disappearances, trumped-up charges and freezing of assets based on baseless allegations, violate not only fundamental rights but also the constitutional mandate to defend civic space as a pillar of democracy,” the CHR said.

He added that Section 15 of Article XIII of the Constitution states that the state “shall respect the role of independent popular organizations in enabling peaceful and democratic participation.”

The CHR said targeting or intimidating CSOs undermines public trust in government institutions, stressing that all branches of government and law enforcement have a duty to protect the rights of individuals to come together and associate peacefully.

He said all forms of intimidation against lawful CSOs must end and their role in promoting a just and humane society must be honored.
