Bev Priestman no longer head coach of Canadian women’s soccer following investigation into Olympic drone scandal

Canada Soccer has split from Bev Priestman.

The decision to relieve Priestman of his coaching duties comes after the launch of an independent investigation into his role in a drone surveillance scandal at last summer’s Paris Olympics.

Assistant coach Jasmine Mander and analyst Joseph Lombardi were also relieved of their duties when Canada Soccer released the investigation’s findings.

The women’s soccer team found itself embroiled in the scandal after New Zealand raised concerns about a drone flying near their training area as the team prepared for the Olympic tournament soccer competition. FIFA fined Canada Soccer $228,000 and removed six points from the team’s standings.

FIFA also suspended Priestman, Mander and Lombardi for one year. Despite the penaltyCanada was able to access the group. Germany eliminated Canada from the Olympic tournament in the quarterfinals.

The investigation led by lawyer Sonia Regenbogen of Mathews, Dinsdale & Clark found no evidence that Canadian players had viewed the drone footage. However, he found that assistant coaches and other support staff “did not feel they could challenge the head coach’s authority.”

Fox News Digital could not immediately reach Priestman for comment. Priestman led Canada to the gold medal in the Tokyo Games. The study found that no drones were used in Japan, but that two national team coaches engaged in inappropriate surveillance “before the 2024 Paris Olympics.”

“The findings of the independent investigator reveal that the drone incident in Paris was a symptom of a past pattern of unacceptable culture and insufficient oversight within national teams,” said Canada Soccer CEO Kevin Blue, in a press release.

“This is no longer part of our operations. In fact, the findings of the investigation strengthen our resolve to continue to implement the changes necessary to improve Canada Soccer, in all respects, and to do so with urgency. Even if “The independent investigation is complete, there is still much to be done to put things on a new path.”

The review also found that claims suggesting the men’s team used drones to spy on an opponent during the Copa America were unfounded. However, the investigation found “potential violations” by Canada’s former men’s coach, John Herdman, who was not interviewed due to scheduling issues.

“Potential violations of the Canada Soccer Code of Conduct and Ethics by the former head coach of the men’s national team have been identified,” Canada Soccer said in a summary of the investigation. “In accordance with the Canada Soccer Disciplinary Code, a disciplinary process is underway to adjudicate these potential violations.”

Herdman left Canada Soccer last year and is currently the coach of Toronto FC Major League Soccer.

“The organization will carefully review and address the report’s findings over the coming days. MLSE (Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment) and Toronto FC will reserve any further comment until the review process is complete,” he said. Toronto FC said in a statement.
