Search underway for missing hunter in Bankhead National Forest

LAWRENCE CO., Alabama (WAF) – The search is currently underway for a 70-year-old hunter last seen early Thursday morning in the Bankhead National Forest.

According to the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, Daniel Whittaker went hunting early Thursday and has not been seen since around 4 a.m. Thursday. His family told the sheriff’s office he was supposed to come home around noon Thursday.

His family also told the sheriff’s office that he was in very good health.

Crews found Whittaker’s car around 5:30 a.m. Thursday and now several agencies, including the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, Lawrence County EMA, the Franklin County EMA, Winston County EMA and other local groups are assisting in the search efforts.

Teams use helicopters and drones equipped with thermal cameras for research.

Search efforts will resume around 8 a.m. Friday. Those interested in participating in the search can meet at the Pine Torch Church located in the Bankhead National Forest in Moulton.
