representative Robert Garcia (D-CA), who served on the House Oversight Committee on Covid, said Friday that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. The appointment to head the Department of Health and Human Services was “irresponsible, shameful and disgusting.”

President-elect Donald Trump announced Kennedy as his choice Thursday, quick draw outrage on his anti-vaccine and conspiratorial opinions.

“Of all the horrible choices, there probably couldn’t be a worse choice for the country and for the families than this one,” Garcia said as the CNN anchor. Jim Acosta asked what Kennedy could mean for Americans in a future pandemic. Garcia continued:

You’re talking about a person who is literally a tinfoil hat conspiracy theorist. This is a person who, by the way, said that it is not possible to prove that vaccines are actually effective. This is someone who said that fluoride in water causes people to become trans or gay. This is someone who has continued to attack basic scientists and doctors, who wants to gut the NIH and fire employees. The NIH is American scientists and doctors who conduct research to prevent pandemics and the spread of disease.

His actions, as we all know, have already caused measles outbreaks in other parts of the world. And we are going to entrust this person with responsibility for our health? We just went through the greatest loss of life event, the pandemic, just a few years ago. And now Donald Trump wants to put a vaccine skeptic in charge of our health care system – vaccines, by the way, that have saved millions of lives around the world? I can’t tell you how irresponsible, shameful, and disgusting this choice is, and something we should expect from Donald Trump, but something we must fiercely oppose.

“I think it’s a sad time for our country,” Garcia added.
