Lake High School vs Hoban OHSAA Football Results, Updates

It’s week 12 and Lake visits Bishop Hoban in an OHSAA Division II, Region 5 second round playoff game at Dowed Field in Akron.

Lake (7-4) is the No. 7 seed in Division II, Region 5 and Hoban (9-2) is the No. 2 seed.

The Blue Streaks Host won 28-0 against North Canton Hoover and the host knights dominated Firestone 45-6 last Friday night in first-round play.

Hoban wins 21-14. Sophomore Brayton Feister with key points in the fourth quarter as the Knights advance.

Junior Trent Hayden threw two touchdown passes to junior Jackson Callaway and Feister ran for a touchdown to lead the host Knights (10-2) to a Division II, Region 5 quarterfinal victory over the Blue Streaks ( 7-5) Friday night at Dowed Field. .

Hayden completed 10 of 14 passes for 127 yards. Feister ran for 172 yards on 28 carries and had one catch for 10 yards.

Hoban sophomore John Johnson had four catches for 53 yards and Callaway had two catches for 38 yards. Senior Owen Turner recovered a fumble caused by senior Nicholas Crawford and junior Patrick Kinsell. Senior linebacker Eli Lee, an Ohio State University recruit, had 10 solo tackles and Crawford added five solo tackles.

Lake senior Charlie Christopher, an Ohio University recruit, ran for 99 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries on offense and made 17 tackles (13 solo) and forced a fumble on defense.

Lake sophomore Ty DeGeorge completed 4 of 7 passes for 101 yards, senior Ethan Hunt had one catch for 65 yards and junior Chase Fuller and senior Hunter Patterson each recovered a fumble.

Brayton Feister runs 1 yard for a touchdown and Jeremy Hammel scores the extra point to give Hoban a 21-14 lead with 5:01 left in the third quarter.

The drive included a 47-yard pass from Trent Hayden to John Johnson. Tylan Boykin made a good kickoff return.

Lake’s Charlie Christopher runs for a 38-yard touchdown and Braden Talkington scores the extra point to tie the score at 14-14 with 7:12 left in the second quarter.

Christopher accounted for Lake’s yards on the drive with two runs: 25 yards and 38 yards.

Trent Hayden throws a 13-yard touchdown pass to Jackson Callaway and Jeremy Hammel scores the extra point to give Hoban a 14-7 lead with 8:10 left in the third quarter.

Hoban’s Brayton Feister ran for 35 yards on six carries during the drive. Owen Turner had a good kickoff return.

Lake’s Charlie Christopher runs for a 10-yard touchdown and Braden Talkington scores the extra point to tie the score at 7-7 with 3:26 left in the second quarter.

Lake’s Ty DeGeorge connected with Ethan Hunt on a 65-yard pass during the drive.

Christopher and Davis Matson also made key runs during the drive.

Hoban’s Brayton Feister ran for 30 yards on four carries and had a 10-yard catch during practice.

Ty DeGeorge, Lake’s second-year quarterback has 99 carries for 584 yards and eight touchdowns and completed 39 of 54 passes for 446 yards and six touchdowns. DeGeorge is Lake’s primary QB and Davis Matson will take snaps in wild formations. Alex Quior (38 of 68, 549 yards, three touchdowns) also played quarterback, wide receiver and safety for Lake, but missed the last four games with a knee injury.

Lake’s top senior is Ohio University recruit Charlie Christopher, a running back and linebacker. Christopher has 154 carries for 855 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground. Defensively, he has 101 tackles (73 solo), 23 tackles for loss, eight sacks, three fumble recoveries and one interception. He also returned a kickoff for a touchdown this season and blocked a punt.

Lake senior two-way lineman Ryan Lippe is expected to play football at Air Force.

Matson has 115 carries for 691 yards and six touchdowns. Ethan Hunt has 40 receptions for 471 yards and five touchdowns and 12 carries for 109 yards and two touchdowns.

Ty DeGeorge and Hunt each have three interceptions and Braeden Shrock has two interceptions on defense. Lake’s Ryan Lippe and Kyle Hammer have 14 TFLs each. Lippe forced two fumbles and Hammer recovered two fumbles. Lake’s Aaron Mitchell has 11 TFLs and four sacks. Hunter Patterson has 10 TFLs and four sacks.

Hoban includes LB Eli Lee (Ohio State recruit), TE Tayte Crable (Toledo), DB-WR-PR-KR Tylan Boykin (Eastern Michigan) and LB Tanner Mintz (Robert Morris).

OL Sam Greer, DB-WR-PR-KR Elbert Hill IV and RB Brayton Feister are among the other Knights with Division I college scholarship offers.

Feister has 182 carries for 1,203 yards and 16 touchdowns and one receiving touchdown. Ethan Roksandich has 57 carries for 399 yards and five touchdowns and one receiving touchdown. La’Near Folk has 53 carries for 402 yards and seven touchdowns and Hill has 18 carries for 203 yards and two touchdowns.

Hoban QB Trent Hayden has one rushing touchdown and is 53 of 85 passing for 737 yards and seven touchdowns. Hoban’s leading receivers are Crable (15 catches, 171 yards, one touchdown), John Johnson (13 catches, 144 yards, one touchdown), Hill (12 catches, 288 yards, three touchdowns) and Jackson Callaway (12 catches, 162 yards, two TDs).

Ohio University recruit Charlie Christopher passed for three touchdowns and 96 yards on 14 carries and had an interception and nine solo tackles to lead the No. 7 seed. Lake (7-4) after the No. 10 seed Vacuum cleaner (6-5).

Lake rushed 54 times for 319 yards and Hoover had 95 rushing yards on 24 carries. Lake’s Davis Matson had 120 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries and Ty DeGeorge added 96 yards on 17 carries. Lake’s Ethan Hunt also had two interceptions and Kyle Hammer had an interception.

Sophomore Brayton Feister scored on touchdown runs of 9, 7 and 5 yards to propel the No. 2 seed Knights (9-2) after the 15th seed Falcons (5-6).

Trent Hayden threw a 25-yard TD pass to Jackson Callaway and an 18-yard TD pass to Ethan Roksandich. La’Near Folk ran for a 16-yard TD. Jeremy Hammel made a 21-yard field goal and 4-of-4 extra points before giving way to Oliver Nonno for the final PAT.

This is the 23rd Lake football team to make the OHSAA playoffs: 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021, 2016, 2015, 2010, 2007, 2006, 2004, 2003, 2002, 1999, 1998, 1997 (2nd), 1996, 1994, 1993 (2nd), 1991 (2nd), 1990, 1988 and 1972.

Lake is 26-21 in the playoffs. The Blue Streaks were state runners-up in 1997, 1993 and 1991. The 2010, 1999 and 1972 teams each played in a state semifinal.

These are the 20th Hoban football teams to make the OHSAA playoffs: 2023 (2nd), 2022 (2nd), 2021 (2nd), 2020 (1st), 2019, 2018 (1st), 2017 (1st ), 2016 (1st), 2015 (1st), 2009, 2008, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002, 2001, 2000, 1999 and 1998.

Hoban is 58-14 in the postseason. The Knights were state champions in 2020, 2018, 2017, 2016 and 2015 and state runners-up in 2023, 2022 and 2021. The 2008 and 2002 teams each played in a state semifinal.

Dan DeGeorge is in his 12th season as Lake’s head coach and Tim Tyrrell is in his 12th season as Hoban’s head coach.

DeGeorge, a 1992 Hoban graduate, returns to Dowed Field to coach against his alma mater. DeGeorge was a notable football and baseball player at Hoban.

DeGeorge is 75-55 as Lake’s coach.

DeGeorge replaced longtime Blue Streaks coach Jeff Durbin in 2013 after Durbin resigned after 23 seasons at the helm of the football program.

DeGeorge graduated from Malone College in 1997, where he was a four-year letterwinner for the Pioneers and started all 42 games during his college career. He was a three-year captain and an NAIA All-American. He was inducted into the Malone Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007.

DeGeorge joined the Lake Football coaching staff as an assistant coach in 1997 and was selected as offensive coordinator in 2003. During his tenure, Lake advanced to the state playoffs in the OHSAA in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2010. The Blue Streaks finished in first place. 2010 Division II state semifinalists.

Tyrrell is 138-24 as Hoban’s coach and 203-75 in his 23rd year overall. Tyrrell replaced longtime Knights coach Ralph Orsini in 2013 after Orsini compiled 19 seasons at the helm of the football program.

Tyrrell led Hoban to five state championships (Division III in 2015 and 2016 and Division II in 2017, 2018 and 2020) and three state runners-up finishes (Division II in 2021, 2022 and 2023). Hoban was a state semifinalist in 2002 and 2008 before his arrival.

Tyrrell grew up swimming with the Youngstown YMCA Neptunes and the Logan Swim Club, and was a goalie on youth soccer teams. He was a two-year starter at quarterback in football and a three-year starter at guard/forward in basketball at Youngstown Ursuline before graduating in 1993.

Tyrrell was named a tight end at Youngstown State from 1995 to 1997 under Jim Tressel. Tyrrell served as an assistant football coach at Ursuline in 1998, YSU in 1999 and 2000 and St. Thomas Aquinas in 2001 before embarking on his head coaching career.

Tyrrell compiled a 26-33 record as Aquinas’ coach from 2002 to 2007 and a 39-18 record as coach of Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory School in Hollywood, Fla. 2008 to 2012.
