UK’s ‘worst seaside town’ where it’s so ‘dead’, even locals admit ‘it’s terrible here’ | United Kingdom | News

A British seaside town has been divided after being branded the worst in the country.

Rhyl, North Wales, is located in the county of Denbighshire, east of Colwyn Bay.

It was a popular location thanks to its typical seaside town attractions, such as its large beach, arcades and shops.

But now demand has fallen, leaving business owners and residents uncertain about Rhyl’s future.

Business owner Mark Chesterton said in July that the streets were getting quieter.

He said North Wales live: “We are usually full of customers at this time of year. This street is usually full of traffic and footfall. Last July was a record month for us. How will independent businesses continue?”

The same media outlet reported that trains brought passengers into the city via a route that gave them a view of the beach, but a concrete wall has since blocked that route.

In the meantime, many businesses have been forced to close their doors.

Mr Chesterton added: “It’s quiet everywhere. There’s no reason to come to Rhyl. Last Saturday there was no one in the store, which is unheard of, and it’s still died today. It’s terrible, absolutely terrible.

“I was talking to a lady just down the street who has been at her store for 11 years. She said she had never known it so poorly.

“We’ve had quiet times before, but now it’s ridiculous. It’s the same in Prestatyn and Abergele. Towyn is the busiest because it has entertainment.”

He added that Rhyl “is no longer the place it was ten years ago” and “something must be done to stop the decline”.

Earlier this year, the Telegraph ranked Rhyl as the UK’s worst seaside town, angering some locals.

Chad Jones, owner of Sacrament Tattoo on Queen Street, told the Rhyl’s Diary: “I’m biased but I believe Rhyl is the best place in the world.

“I was born and raised here. I even refused to move to Benidorm with my father because I love this place so much.”

Angela from Prestatyn of the Rhyl Pavilion Theater said: “A great place for locals. It’s nice to have a theater nearby. Good choice of drinks and snacks and the option of pre-show dinner at the 1891 Restaurant. “

Other locals suggested ways Rhyl could improve its reputation.

Student Megan Johnson said: “I think the biggest problem is that so few things are open. It’s summer and many attractions and stores are either closed or empty.”

Emma Hoppley added: “Rhyl could be better. If there were more activities other than the arcades I think people would have a better opinion of the place.”
