Imprisoned Iranian Nobel Peace Prize winner transferred to hospital

Iranian authorities have authorized the hospitalization of imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi after nearly nine weeks of discomfort, a group campaigning on the activist’s behalf said on Sunday.

The Free Narges Coalition said in a statement that Ms. Mohammadi was to be granted medical leave to receive comprehensive treatment for several conditions.

He said simply moving her to hospital would not solve serious health problems caused by months of neglect and deprivation.

Ms Mohammadi, 52, is being held in Iran’s Evin prison, which houses political prisoners and people with links to the West. She was already serving a 30-month prison sentence, to which an additional 15 months were added in January.

On Saturday, Iranian authorities imposed an additional six-month sentence on her after she protested the execution of another political prisoner in the women’s section of Evin Prison on August 6.

Ms. Mohammadi suffers from heart disease and, according to her medical report released in September, the main artery to her heart is once again experiencing a serious complication.

The coalition said it continues to demand Ms. Mohammadi’s unconditional release and full access to medical care.

Mohammadi is the 19th woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize and the second Iranian after human rights activist Shirin Ebadi in 2003.

Ms. Mohammadi continued her activism despite numerous arrests by Iranian authorities and years behind bars.
