Giants star disagrees with benching Daniel Jones: ‘He’s the best quarterback on the team’

THE The giants decision to bench quarterback Daniel Jones in favor of Tommy DeVito may aim to avoid a significant financial impact on the future of the team. However, some Giants players, including a key defensive leader, are reportedly unhappy with the move.

Tuesday, defensive tackle Dexter Laurent addressed the team’s decision during a charity event at the Community Food Bank of New Jersey. According to the New York Post journalist Ryan DunleavyLawrence expressed a different view on the situation, hinting at disagreement over how it was handled.

“He’s QB1. For me, the best quarterback on the team,” Lawrence said, according to Dunleavy. “But they see things differently. I guess that’s all that matters.

The Giants announced Monday that Jones would be demoted from starting quarterback to third string. Lawrence noted that Jones is handling the situation well, given the circumstances.

“He’s strong,” Lawrence said. “He understands the business side. I guess they talked about it. He obviously doesn’t like the choice that was made. But he has to live with it and I think he will grow from it.

The Giants described the decision as football-related, likely citing Jones’ 2-8 record as a starter and his struggles to consistently move the offense forward. But this decision could also have financial implications. By benching Jones, the team avoids the risk of triggering a clause in his contract that would guarantee $23 million in 2025 if he suffers an injury this season that would prevent him from having a physical in March.

DeVito is expected to make his first start of the season Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, while Jones will be a spectator.
