Five upgrades to expect with the iPhone SE 4 early next year

Now that the iPhone 16 range has been revealed to customers, some people might be thinking about the future of the iPhone. However, this is not the iPhone17and it’s not in a year…

The next iPhone should actually be the iPhone SE 4, except delay. This iPhone is expected to be released next spring, which means we’ll be about six months away from seeing it. This will be the first update of the iPhone SE in three years, and it will probably be the biggest overhaul of the iPhone SE since its creation.

Newer design, better display

Apple has stuck to the iPhone 8 design since iPhone SE 2 in 2020. This design still features a 4.7-inch LCD screen, rounded edges, and a home button. However, the next iPhone SE we should move away from that…

Instead, we are waiting a design similar to that iPhone14with a larger 6.1-inch OLED display, flat-edge design, Face ID and the smallest notch of this era. However, we still expect it to feature a single camera, rather than the dual camera of the iPhone14.

Display Analyst Ross Young says that the iPhone SE 4 is expected to share the same 6.1-inch OLED panel as the iPhone 14, supplied by BOE and LG Display.

USB-C

Unlike the iPhone14 And Current iPhone SEApple is expected to ditch the Lightning connector on the iPhone SE 4.

This is mainly due to EU regulations forcing all devices with a charging port to move to a unified connector, namely USB-C.

Apple initially switched to USB-C on the iPhone15 programming last year and next iPhone SE will be the last iPhone to make the transition. If you are a iPhone SE buyer, you will soon be able to charge your phone with the same cable as your iPad and laptop.

Better cameras

Apple’s next iPhone SE will likely feature the same 48MP rear sensor as the iPhone 15, taking a huge step forward from the iPhone SE3The 12MP sensor of the iPhone 8.

The iPhone SE 4 will also likely share the same 12MP selfie camera as the iPhone 15, another huge step forward from the iPhone SE3The 7MP selfie camera.

Apple Intelligence

According to reports from Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, the next iPhone SE should support Apple Intelligence, probably with an A18 chip and 8 GB of RAM. It’s a bit surprising, but it seems like Apple wants to get Apple Intelligence into as many hands as possible, even on its cheapest new iPhone.

As a reminder, Apple Intelligence introduces a host of new features, such as Writing Tools, Photo Cleanup, Genmoji, Image Playground, Notification Summaries, and an all-new Siri.

Apple’s first modem

The fourth generation iPhone SE should have Apple’s first ever internal modem, which they have been working on for many years. Apple acquired Intel’s former modem business in 2019 with the intention of developing their own modems and moving away from Qualcomm.

We exclusively reported earlier this week at 9to5Mac that Apple will ship its first in-house 5G modem, codenamed Centauri, in the iPhone SE 4. This modem will also handle Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS.

Qualcomm’s 5G modems are one of the most expensive components in the iPhone, so it makes sense that Apple would try to move away from them. This could be one of the key factors why the iPhone SE 4 has such a low starting price despite being such a modern iPhone.

iPhone SE prices

According to rumorsthe next generation iPhone SE will be more expensive, potentially $499. However, it’s still a pretty decent price, considering this is a very modern iPhone for under $500.

Apple also sells the iPhone14 for $599 currently, so the fact that we’re getting a modernized version of this phone for even less would be a steal. Apple would most likely abandon the iPhone14 after publishing the following iPhone SEwhich means the iPhone lineup would potentially look like this:

  • iPhone SE: $499
  • iPhone 15: $699
  • iPhone 15 Plus: $799
  • iPhone 16: $799
  • iPhone 16 Plus: $899
  • iPhone 16 Pro: $999
  • iPhone 16 Pro Max: $1,199

This would be a fairly unified iPhone lineup, with all iPhones equipped with USB-C. It would certainly be a bit weird if the cheapest iPhone SE benefited from Apple Intelligence support while the more expensive iPhone15 it’s not, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple discontinued this phone as well.
