The implementation of AI systems in retail continues to grow, and the fact that nearly a fifth of global e-commerce transactions could be driven, in part, by this technology is significant, said Caila Schwartz , Director of Consumer Insights and Strategy at Salesforce.

For comparison, Salesforce data shows social networks the platforms generate a tenth of e-commerce traffic and 2-3% of all orders, with little room for further growth. The fact that AI adoption and use continues to grow year over year could be indicative of the appeal of more powerful, personalization-focused technology.

“It has a much bigger impact than social media, (even though) social media is a much more visible consumption platform,” Schwartz said.

Salesforce attributes the majority of this influence to product recommendations carried out by AI systems. In many cases, the systems that determine which items a site recommends to each consumer remain largely undetectable to the average shopper. But there is room for new types of technology, like AI agents, that are more visible to consumers, to also help increase the percentage of AI interactions that generate sales.

“A lot of the growth we’re seeing… comes from new technologies being implemented. So as more retailers enable these new AI technologies and experiences, that number will increase,” Schwartz explained.

AI-based agents have only recently started to emerge in the retail space, and they differ from regular agents. chatbot; agents can automate tasks that a human would otherwise have to work on.

So while a chatbot may be able to answer a question like “What is this sweater made of?” » with relative accuracy, an agent may be able to help a consumer initiate the returns process, find the most convenient returns center, and provide the most optimal refund option, all based on what it knows about the consumer’s past purchases and habits. Agents can also provide consumers with highly personalized product recommendations across a variety of channels, just like Amazon’s Rufus can do.
