Amarillo College prepares future firefighters with physical fitness tests

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – Amarillo College prepares future firefighters with physical fitness tests.

Fire officials say the physical fitness test consists of simulated activities at the scene of a fire and is part of the Fire Academy’s admission requirements.

“It’s an entrance exam for those interested in the Fire Academy, a time to see if they can do the job of fighting fires. So we have our equipment here,” said Class 58 cadet captain Kevin Keller.

The physical fitness test will take place on Saturday, November 16 at the college for those interested in learning more about the AC Fire Academy.

Educators say the day will provide future firefighters with an opportunity to gain hands-on experience, skills needed for a career in firefighting and help address the shortage of first responders.

“The reason you should get involved is because it’s something that will directly impact the community you live in and even though your education is transferable across the state, as well as across the country, shortages are very real here in the country. Panhandle,” said Stephen Malley, Fire Academy coordinator.

According to educators, the goal is to inspire and give those who are interested an opportunity and a way to directly impact their community by experiencing firsthand the hard work that goes into this career path .

“Firefighters have a tradition, a habit of giving back to the community. Not just in our daily work, but also on our days off, and a lot of that is charitable work,” Keller said.

The fitness test will take place at 9am just before the Hour Tower Climb on Saturday and anyone who wishes to attend is welcome.
