Carnival Cruise Line has added a popular travel accessory to its “banned items” list and it’s not the item you’d expect.

The object in question? Bluetooth speakers.

While this article may surprise you, Carnival recently has updated the section of its website on prohibited items prohibit passengers from taking speakers on board.

“All speakers (including Bluetooth, portable and wireless types) and radios are prohibited and will be retained and returned at the end of the cruise,” the notice indicated under “safety information” on the Carnival website. “For safety reasons, public announcements must be heard by all guests and crew.”

The cruise line goes a step further by requiring all travelers to wear headphones when using personal devices to watch shows or movies in public areas.

For those who dare to take their speakers on board, they risk a rude awakening. Carnival says guests can expect them to be confiscated upon boarding and not returned until they disembark.

It’s unclear exactly when the speakers were added to the “banned items” list, although the change appears to have been implemented within the last month.

Carnival allowed speakers on board if used in cabins. But the cruise liner has consistently discouraged passengers from using wireless devices in public areas of the ship.
