City of Salem shares thoughts ahead of Trump visit

SALEM, Virginia (WFXR) – All signs point to the Salem Civic Center could be the biggest event hosted when former President Donald Trump visits for a presidential campaign rally Saturday.

The announcement was made on Friday and people couldn’t believe it.

“We had heard rumors that he might make an appearance in the New River Valley,” said Robert Andrews, chairman of the Salem Republican Committee. “Then I got a phone call and someone said, ‘Did you hear where he decided to come?’ , but in the best possible way.

The gathering is scheduled for 4 p.m., but doors open at noon.

Given the high demand and weather permitting, local Republicans say it could be moved to a larger venue like Carilion Field or Salem Stadium.

“Any time a former president and a potential president comes in, it’s going to be a huge event for Salem,” said Republican Salem City Councilman Hunter Holliday. “Not only is President Trump coming to Salem, but all the other speakers who eventually come as well.”

Tickets for the event sold out quickly and people who purchased them are eagerly awaiting them.

“It’s a unique opportunity, at least for me,” said Jennifer Martin, a Salem resident participating in the event. “I’m excited to see his message and be a part of it.”

This rally will take place just three days before the presidential election. Virginia isn’t expected to be a battleground state next Tuesday, either.

However, analysts see it as a way for Trump to push the score into friendly territory.

“If you go back to 2016, and even 2020, you have several of these seats that Trump won by 95, 96, 97 and 98 percent,” said Aaron Van Allen, associate professor of government at Liberty University. “I think this is an opportunity for him to get out and try to strengthen his base and really energize (the community).”

We will keep you updated if any details about the event change.
