One Grocery Store Is Already Raising Prices to Prepare for Trump’s Price Proposals

As you’ve probably heard by now, much of what propelled President-elect Donald Trump’s victory was voters’ understandable anger over “kitchen table” economic issues like food prices. .

However, many independent economists have been sounding the alarm for months, saying the president-elect’s economic proposals would only make the problem worse, along with many other economic problems beyond just groceries.

This message, however, appears to have fallen on deaf ears. Today, everything seems to indicate that voters are already beginning to realize the impact of the president-elect’s victory on the price of goods – even before he takes office.

One manager’s grocery store has already started raising prices to prepare for Trump’s proposed tariffs.

There’s no two ways about it: Polls have shown that voters who pulled the lever on the president-elect’s election were astonishingly misinformed on almost every major issue of the last election, from poll rates to crime to immigration and, yes, economic issues. .

This has led to much anecdotal lament from his supporters on social media, now that they see, in hindsight, what they actually voted for – particularly regarding Trump’s plans to impose significant customs duties on imported products, which include just about everything. We buy.

Indeed, prices are almost always passed on to consumers. The president-elect’s supporters often counter that this will simply force manufacturers to make their products in the United States, but that’s not how it works. They will first have to build factories and distribution systems, including the supplies needed to BUILD those factories, a process that would take years and cost enough money to put many manufacturers out of business.

Dozens of independents economists have sounded the alarm This was talked about for months before the election, but it seems pretty clear at this point that virtually no one in the electorate listened – or if they did, they decided the economists were just lying.

A grocery store manager and TikToker Brittany Shawhowever, is one of countless examples showing that this is simply not the case.

The director explained how prices of products like coffee and even laundry detergent have increased since the election.

Voters’ regrets about Trump’s election are so numerous that they have given rise to a whole new side of TikTok called “FAFO TikTok,” an acronym, of course, for the popular saying “(Eff) Around and Find Out.” .

Shaw referenced this in her wildly viral video, in which she wrote that she “lives for the discovery part of FAFO that happens in real time as a store manager.”

Her video shows her, just days after the election, slapping new price tags on products with higher prices than before, such as several different types of coffee, each increased by a whole dollar. The vaunted dozen eggs that became a talking point throughout the election also soared to $5.05 in his store — although that is, of course, not a question of tariffs; it’s a bird flu problem (even if neither candidate ever bothered to talk about it).

This is surely infuriating for many after consecutive years of rising food prices – increases which, in many cases, have continued despite inflation returning to normal. due in large part to corporate price gouging known as “greed.” (It’s also an economic fact: Once prices rise, they rarely come back down without an economic collapse. It probably would have helped if Biden or Harris had bothered to explain this to voters before boasting about good health of the economy for two years in a row.)

But it’s also infuriating for another reason: This is precisely what economists said would happen all along.

No manufacturer or retailer is going to just absorb the increased costs brought on by Trump’s proposed tariffs out of the goodness of their heart, nor will they invest the billions of dollars needed to build the non-existent infrastructure needed to the production of these products in the United States. States.

Coffee is a particularly perfect example of this problem: the only place in America where coffee can actually grow is Hawaii, and the state’s entire coffee industry produces less than 1% of the world’s coffee supply. Several companies and manufacturers announced they would raise prices to compensate for Trump’s proposed tariffs.

Shaw’s TikTok elicited exactly the response you’d expect if you’re not someone who voted for the president-elect. Disbelief was the overall theme – not in the sense of regret, but rather in the sense that his constituents thought Shaw was lying or misinformed.

But his grocery store is far from the only one. As the CEO of auto parts retailer AutoZone said during a recent earnings conference call, “If we get tariffs, we’ll pass them on to the consumer.” dozens of other companies have made it clear they plan to do the same.

Steve Madden shoes. Colombia sportswear. Stanley Black & Decker — all announced that they would pass the additional costs of the tariffs, as well as their impact on supply chain logistics, directly to consumers who just elected a president because they were convinced that it would reduce the cost of goods. . Economists say even stores like Dollar Tree will likely raise prices.

All this is probably worsened by Trump’s proposed immigration policies and mass deportations, which could have a drastic impact on our supply chain due to the high proportion of workers in fields like agriculture, food processing and distribution who are immigrants.

All of this will amount to an additional $46 billion to $78 billion flowing out of citizens’ wallets each year. according to the National Retail Federation. Judging by the fact that Shaw has since released another video showing more products, like laundry detergent and candy, that have increased in price since his first viral video, it seems likely that we’ll stick to the high end of this estimate.

None of this is surprising to anyone who paid the slightest attention during the election campaign.

The fact that we already seem to be diving headlong into this before the president-elect even takes office only further underscores what American voters seem to have great difficulty understanding: Elections have consequencesand that goes double when you don’t even bother to do your due diligence before filling out your ballot. Eff Around and Discover indeed.
