Mosby offers to work with Avula to “build a better future” for Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. — Richmond mayoral candidate Michelle Mosby sent her supporters home Tuesday night, saying she remains optimistic about the race. However, after the final results were announced, Mosby congratulated Dr. Danny Avula on “a well-organized race” and pledged to work with him to “build a better future” for the city.

“I will continue to be an active and engaged member of this community, and I look forward to doing what I can with Mayor-elect Avula to build a better future for ourselves, our children, and our community,” Mosby wrote .

“To the people of our great city, I want to express my deepest gratitude to each of you who have trusted me and my vision for our community. I am truly touched by the support I have received.

Throughout this campaign, I have been inspired by the passion, resilience and determination of our residents. I have listened to your concerns, your hopes and your dreams for a better future. And I am committed to continuing to work to make these dreams a reality, even if it is not in the role of mayor.

I want to thank everyone who believed in our campaign. I would like to thank my team, family and friends for their unwavering support and hard work. I also want to thank everyone who supported my campaign, from elected officials, community and faith leaders, and business owners in every neighborhood in our city.

I would like to congratulate Danny Avula on a well run race. I will continue to be an active and engaged member of this community, and I look forward to doing what I can with Mayor-elect Avula to build a better future for ourselves, our children, and our community.

Michelle Mosb

The former city councilwoman and business owner entered the race in hopes of becoming Richmond’s first woman elected mayor.

Mosby, who runs a nonprofit that helps formerly incarcerated people reenter society, was the only candidate to run for mayor before losing in 2016 to incumbent Mayor Levar Stoney.

Mosby campaigned on improving affordable housing, strengthening municipal services and improving public safety in Richmond. She told CBS 6 she thinks the city needs an experienced mayor.

“We had five candidates, but it was really a race between me and Danny Avula. So I believe what I believed in was reflected in the results here tonight,” Mosby said. “And so I didn’t think about what it would look like in a runoff because I believe one of us will be the winner tonight.”
